Provider Guidelines

Guidelines for ABAT, QASP-S, or QBA Coursework Providers

Coursework Overview

Coursework to prepare for the ABAT, QASP-S, or QBA exam is intended to provide a foundation of knowledge to not only pass the exam, but to prepare the professional/paraprofessional with information to utilize in treatment development and implementation.

QABA Coursework Approved Providers

QABA approved providers are individuals or organizations that have been approved to offer coursework in accordance with the guidelines outlined in this manual. Only approved providers can use the QABA coursework provider logo. The content of the coursework must be designed by a professional who has been QABA certified, or certified by an accredited certifying entity, for a minimum of 2 (two) years. For organizations, you must designate a Provider Point of Contact (PPOC) who is the liaison between QABA and your organization.

Application guidelines:

  1. Minimum Online Presence Requirements

All approved coursework providers must ensure transparency and accessibility through a visible online presence. Each provider must maintain:

  • A fully functional and publicly accessible website
  • A working and monitored business phone number for student inquiries
  • A clearly visible and easy-to-navigate webpage displaying:

○ Course descriptions

○ Course prices

○ Refund and cancellation policies

These elements help ensure clarity for prospective students and demonstrate professionalism and legitimacy.

  1. Required Application Materials

All initial applications must include the following materials at the time of submission: ● One sample of the course curriculum (at least one full unit or module) ● One sample quiz or assessment from any section of the course

  • Clearly defined grading and passing criteria for all course assessments
  • A detailed outline of the grading policy
  • A formal appeals process for students who wish to contest grades or evaluation outcomes

These materials ensure that QABA coursework maintains consistent academic quality and fair evaluation practices.

  1. Instructor Credentialing Requirements

To ensure instructional integrity and content expertise, the following standards apply: Instructor Requirements by Certification Level

  • QASP-S and QBA coursework:

○ Instructors must hold a QBA or BCBA credential for a minimum of two (2) years

Supervised instructors are not permitted to teach at these levels

  • ABAT coursework:

Supervised instructors may be used, provided supervision is clearly documented

Minimum Staffing Requirements

Coursework providers must meet one of the following:

  • Option 1: Employ at least two (2) qualified QBAs or BCBAs with a minimum of two years of professional experience each
  • Option 2: Employ one (1) lead instructor with at least five years of field experience as:

○ A nationally certified behavior analyst

○ A licensed behavior analyst

○ A PhD-level professional in a related field

  1. Application and Renewal Fees

To support quality assurance and program oversight, the following fees apply:

Fee TypeAmount
New Coursework Provider Application$250
Annual Provider Renewal$150

All fees are non-refundable and due at the time of submission.

  1. Organizational Responsibility

By applying, the organization agrees to:

  • Follow all QABA coursework standards and ethical policies
  • Submit accurate and complete application materials
  • Maintain ongoing compliance with QABA policies
  • Respond to QABA audits or document requests in a timely manner

All applicants are responsible for reviewing QABA’s full Coursework Provider Handbook before applying.

Methods of Instruction

The required coursework for the ABAT is 40 hours of instruction/training. The QASP-S requires 188 hours, including supervision training. The required coursework for the QBA is 270 hours of instruction. Providers may combine several methods of instruction, such as live seminars and workshops, on-line training modules, and small group training sessions. It is vital that the standards that have been set for each certificate be reviewed by the designer of the curriculum. These standards reflect the range and skills for success in the field, as well as the statistical weighting of each topic are related to how many questions on the exam. These standards with suggested hours of training are a guideline on how much time to spend on each topic.

Certificates of Completion

A certificate of completion serves as proof of attendance for participants in coursework. Providers are required to supply certificates of completion to participants upon request within 10 business days of course completion.

A certificate of completion must contain the following:

  • Participants name
  • Display the official QABA approved coursework provider logo
  • Course title: ABAT, QASP-S, or QBA coursework
  • Date(s) of attendance
  • Printed name of the provider and their assigned QABA provider number (received once approved)
  • Signature of presenter (can be a scanned signature)
  • Number of hours completed

Record Keeping and Document Retention

QABA approved providers must keep active files and records of all approved courses and participant attendance information for a minimum of three years from the date of course registration. All completion certificates for all components of the 40, 188, or 270 approved coursework should be maintained. Providers should allow participants the ability to request additional copies of attendance during those 3 years.

Course administration items that must be kept on file by the provider include:

  • Attendance records or online logs
  • Certificates of completion for all components of the curriculum with the number of hours completed
  • Curriculum designer information, including contact information, copy of certificate/license
  • Exam and competency checklists. Providers should determine passing standards
QABA completes annual audits of all files. Providers and participants are chosen randomly. Upon request, providers must comply with requested information within 10 days.
